/ CUFFLEY, ENGLAND
The project consisted of the complete refurbishment + partial demolition of a dilapidated warehouse into a new vibrant + dynamic gym. Our brief was to design a bespoke + award winning space which was packed full of personality + with a strong focus on user experience - the result is just that.

In keeping with Ignite’s vision of being a go-to fitness space, the facility contains an enticing feature reception + café, wellness room, high specification changing, towel service, two studios, and a zoned gym floor filled with market leading cardio kit, strength training equipment + a large rig + sprint track. The main studio is the home to group fitness classes, and the other an immersive cycle studio fitted with a cutting-edge light rig for an unforgettable indoor cycling class experience. In addition, the space is also designed to be multi-functional with frequent DJ nights, live music and community competitions.

[A]SQ’s team of architects + interior designers worked very closely with the passionate owners + all sub-consultants to deliver a unique gym that mirrored client vision + design aspirations.

a new typology of gym in Beckenham, Greater London + the use of rich industrial textures + striking feature lighting provide clean-cut + high energy space's designed to motivate + inspire gym users.

The gym contains x3 principle spaces – Free weights Floor + Cardio floor + Spin studio
– all of which have been fitted with state of the art equipment + tech. The exercise spaces are surrounded by high spec amenity spaces in the form of contemporary changing rooms
+ sauna/steam rooms + treatment rooms + café + communal break-out spaces.

One key goal of the project brief was to create a statement entrance that set the tone + mood of the venue. The use of crisp, linear lines together with an industrial + monotone material palette which was directly inspired by the gym’s concept + branding helped to create a fresh + exciting + dynamic arrival space for the contemporary facility.

With the intent of establishing stronger bonds with place + community, this proposal seeks to introduce human centric programme thought to encourage knowledge of the Flamingo habitat. Drawing from the concepts of interaction, the mobility through the Flamingo Visitor Center [FVC] is designed to introduce connection with its natural context.

This proposal involves multiple volumes for different activities to encourage social interaction through Info-Centre, Display Area, Training Room, Cafe + Restaurant. Together, the blocks form elegant clusters that define the surrounding public + collective spaces + the crowning semitransparent canopy encourages a consistent relationship with the low-rise gardens and higher-rise exhibition spaces + external terrace. The form + inspiration of the feature canopy is taken from the expansive Flamingo wing span + the perforated infill aims to encourage a cooling + dramatic shadowing on both the facades + active landscape. It is proposed that the canopy will contain integrated photovoltaic cells that will provide sufficient power to run FVC.
The choice of sustainable materials, recycling, positioning of internal spaces with respect to the natural daylighting, natural ventilation, water usage, rainwater harvesting + energy production; are all integral components of the project + help provide a sustainable + Carbon neutral pavilion in the site’s natural setting + eco-system.
